Аbout the Union

The Union of Film Professionals of Armenia is a public organization in the Republic uniting film professionals of all creative professions: film directors, organizers of film industry (managers and producers), directors of photography, film script writers, composers, artists, actors, film critics.

The Union is responsible for creation of moral and creative climate promoting the appearance of high-quality works. Recently and at present the Union quite often was in the role of a path finder [pioneer] of artistic valuable projects, supported beginners in advancement of fresh creative ideas. The Union encourages and nominates candidatures for State Prizes and rewards, takes part in International Film Festivals and at the same time organizes different kinds arrangements in Armenia among which “Days of Cinema” of different countries. The International Youth Film Festival “It’s Me” is held the second year in succession. The results are impressive. The Union also organizes conferences on creative problems, film discussions, “round tables”, premieres of new Armenian films, creative meetings with foreign film masters. The arrangements mainly took place in the Cinema House which is the property of the Union of Film Professionals of Armenia. In its activities The Union follows the Regulation and directions approved at the Congress and registered in the Ministry of Justice of Armenia.

In 1957 there was established the Organizing Committee which preceded the foundation of the Union of Cinematographers of Armenia. The famous Film Director Stephan Kevorkov was at the head of the Organizing Committee and later on at the I Congress of Cinematographers he was elected the first secretary of the Board. Subsequently the Union was headed by Film Directors F. Dovlatyan, L. Vagharshyan, film critic K. Kalantar, Director of Photography S.Israelyan were at the head of the Union during different years.

According to the made changes in the Regulations in 90-ies the President of the Union elected at the Congress is the leading position of the Union. Regular plenary sessions hear the accounts of the Board of the Union and the President of the Union, inspection committee and the new staff [membership] of leading organs is elected. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union [1992] the Union of Cinematographers was in the composition of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. The industrial-creative society “Kinocentre” as well as industrial units in some republics, particularly society “Ekran” in Yerevan are the material resources of the activities of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. Acquiring self-independence the Union of Cinematographers of Armenia provides its existence due to the part of shares and now is a part of the Confederation of the Unions of Cinematographers. For almost 40-year period of its existence the Union favoured the development of the Armenian cinematography, participation of cinematographers in cultural life of the republic, the preparation of young creative cadres, rendered material support to cinematographers.

On October 7th, 2017, during the extraordinary assembly of the Union, with an absolute majority of votes, film director Harutyun Khachatryan was elected as the president of the Union of Cinematographers of Armenia.

On November 27th, 2021, during the 15th assembly of the Union, Harutyun Khachatryan was reelected as the president of the Union of Film Professionals of Armenia.
